In 2022 we celebrated 100 years of the Evans Head-Casino Surf Lifesaving Club! Keep your eyes out on our social media pages for some of the fantastic photos from the event!
Main Beach, the only patrolled beach at Evans Head, is a safe stretch of sand with one permanent rip at its southern end, right next to North Wall. Surfers use it to propel themselves out to sea but new swimmers should be aware that it will take you out of your depth very quickly. Keep kids on inner tubes out of this area!
Further north, along Airforce Beach, rips become more regular and more intense. Surf is bigger and the chance of a rescue becomes more remote. Please take care.
Sharks Beach, tucked between South Wall and the headland may look safe one day but it could be very dangerous the next. In big surf tonnes of on-rushing water have no where to escape – except out the extreme northern and southern ends of this U-shaped beach. These ‘escape valves’ are really strong rips and can quickly catch you off your guard. Again, surfers use them to their advantage but great care is needed for inexperienced swimmers.
Chinamans Beach on the southern side of Goanna Headland is a paradise and we expect you to treat it so. No dogs. No rubbish. And no non-sense. This beautiful beach can throw up a chaotic, pounding surf and a powerful long-shore current before ‘ripping’ out to sea. On days when Main beach looks small, Chinamans is much bigger. The beach is particularly dangerous in an easterly swell. Of course there are excellent surf spots here if you know where to go. But those of you still getting to know the ocean – please take care. There are also several scallop-shaped beaches around the perimeter of Goanna Headland. All of them are remote, all beautiful and all capable of drowning the careless swimmer.

If you have any questions about your patrol or would like to re-join and go on to a patrol, please contact Michael Pontefract.
We would like to thank our volunteers for the hours patrolling at Main Beach Evans Head. Without the help from our valuable volunteers, the aquatic visitors to Evans Head would not be able to enjoy the waters of Evans Head safely.
