WHAT IS NIPPERS?

Nippers is a fun way for children aged 5 to Under 14 to enjoy the beach in a safe environment. The Junior Development Program is designed to ensure children have fun at the beach while participating in lessons that will give them a pathway to becoming a fully rounded participant in both lifesaving and sport.

Nippers includes the Junior Development Program which is designed to ensure children have fun at the beach, while participating in lessons that will provide them with a pathway to become a qualified surf lifesaver and a junior competitor (surf sport). Competition plays an important role in helping to strengthen and develop the skills of surf lifesavers.

Surf Life Saving Clubs create and tailor a program to suit the needs of their members and their beach conditions. The program will be focused on participation and enjoyment and will not just be built around competition.

WHAT THEY LEARN

Nippers is about increasing the confidence and skills base of nippers in the water and on the sand while having fun. It is also begins the pathway of making them into the next generation of Surf Life Savers.

what is required for your child to participate in nippers?

They are no physical requirements to begin nippers, they have to be over the age of 5 to begin. However to participate in swimming activities they must complete a pool swim competently signed off by someone other than the parent/carer of the child. Requirements change depending on their age group.

When signing up they will need to have a pink rash vest and a cap to wear for safety requirements.

We suggest to all parents/carers that if their child does not know how to swim confidently to put them into a swim program.

U14’s Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC)

Message from Junior Activity Chair (JAC)

Hello,

My name is Lucy and I am the Junior Activity Chair (JAC) for Evans Head-Casino SLSC. I have been in this role coming up to my 3rd season and before that I was an Age Manager for 5 years. I am heavily involved in the Surf Club and have been since age 5.

Our Nippers is definitely slightly different from other clubs, it is small and close. Our parents/carers and children love this about our club and we take the time to get to know each individual. This season and the next we are changing things up a bit and we are very excited for the new things that will be happening.

Everyone who volunteers their time to work with the nippers really enjoys it. We are very flexible with our volunteers and families and try to make nippers a place that is comfortable, safe and fun.

Kind regards,

Lucy Ellis (JAC).
